MADE FOR THE FLOOR

For goods-in, stores and quality staff who scan supplier labels on cartons and pallets and need to know which number is the item, which is the lot and which is the date.

A USEFUL STARTING POINT

One scan, several fields

A GS1 barcode on a carton or pallet often carries several values in one string: the item's GTIN, a batch or lot, a date and sometimes a quantity or weight. Each value starts with a short GS1 application identifier, such as (01) for the GTIN or (17) for the expiry date. BarcodeBench splits the string into the fields it supports, names each one and shows its exact value, so you can see what your receiving system was given.

FROM QUESTION TO EVIDENCE

Three steps to a useful result.

  1. 01

    Capture the value

Scan into the scan field with a keyboard scanner or the camera, or paste the text a colleague sent you. The value is kept exactly as it arrived.

  2. 02

    Choose the format

Choose GS1 bracketed notation for text such as (01)09527041283601(10)B417, or GS1 machine text for what most scanners send. Help me choose lists the likely formats.

  3. 03

    Read the fields

Each supported field is listed with its exact value and meaning. Dates appear in full, weights with their decimal point and unit, and a wrong check digit beside the digit expected.

A CONCRETE EXAMPLE

Three fields from one carton label

A carton label scans as (01)09527041283601(10)B417(17)270531. Read as GS1 bracketed notation, BarcodeBench lists the GTIN 09527041283601 with check digit 1 confirmed, the batch or lot B417, and the use by or expiry date 270531, shown as 2027-05-31 under the 2026 reference-year policy. The result is Supported checks passed. Had the last digit of the GTIN been 2, the result would be Issues found, with 1 shown as the expected check digit and the original value kept.

USED IN PRODUCTION

From one explained scan to checks on every job.

BarcodeBench explains one value at a time, when someone asks. Two SmartFACT services handle the checks that repeat every day: choosing and checking the label for each job, and checking the parts that go into each kit. Both are in early access, with scope agreed at onboarding.

Early access

LabelRules

When the questions come from your own labels, LabelRules turns customer label requirements described in plain English into approved rules. Those rules select each job's layout, resolve customer codes and check the required values before the label prints.

Early access

KitProof

When scans need checking against what a kit should contain, KitProof builds each kit's checklist from approved plain English component rules and checks every scan against the expected parts and quantities. A wrong or unexpected identifier stays visible instead of filling the next line.

BEFORE YOU START

A few practical answers.

Which fields does it explain?

29 GS1 application identifiers: SSCC (00), GTIN (01), contained GTIN (02), batch or lot (10), production, packing, best before and expiry dates (11, 13, 15, 17), variant (20), serial (21), additional and customer part numbers (240, 241), variable count (30), count (37), order number (400), ship to and location numbers (410, 414), and net weights in kilograms (3100 to 3105) or pounds (3200 to 3205). Anything else is reported as outside the supported profile.

What does a date with 00 as the day mean?

In GS1 dates, day 00 means the last day of the month. With the 2026 reference-year policy selected, 260200 is shown as 2026-02-28. Clear that option and dates are kept as raw digits for review instead of being expanded.

Does a correct check digit prove the product is genuine?

No. A matching check digit shows the number is internally consistent. It does not show who was assigned the GTIN, whether the product is in date or whether the label meets a customer or regulatory requirement. Ownership is a separate question for GS1's own services.

What are the current limits?

BarcodeBench checks the text a scanner or camera produced, not the printed barcode. It does not read image files, grade print quality, identify the printed symbology, look up who owns a GTIN, generate barcodes or certify compliance, and it never opens a Digital Link address. Its GS1 profile explains 29 application identifiers; anything outside it is reported as outside the supported profile, not guessed. Full dates use a stated 2026 reference-year policy. Each value can be up to 4,096 characters (16 KiB), a session holds 16 values, imported files can be up to 2 MiB and a ScannerBench report up to 50 captures. Camera scanning reads Code 128, QR, Data Matrix, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and UPC-E, and depends on the device, the browser and camera permission. There are no accounts, shared records or connections to other systems.

What happens to my data?

Your values stay in this browser. A session is kept in memory while the tab is open; Save on this device keeps it in this browser between visits. Nothing you check is uploaded, and no barcode value is ever placed in a link, a page address or analytics. The camera opens only when you choose it, and frames are decoded on your device. Reports leave out values unless you choose to include them. Google Analytics is optional and loads only after you accept; it never receives scans, values or file contents. Use Analytics settings to change your choice; see /privacy/.
